When you think of police dogs, you probably envision powerful, imposing breeds like German Shepherds. These animals are capable of stopping criminals in their tracks with one bite. Now imagine a dog with short legs, a happy grin and a big heart. Not the crime fighting police dog type, right? Well, one corgi is trying to break that stereotype.
Meet Fu Zai, a six month old male corgi, the newest reserve police dog in Weifang, Shandong province, China. The country’s newest police officer has become a social media star in a short period of time.
Fu Zai has gone through 4 months of rigorous training to develop his impressive skills. Comprising daily sessions focus on obedience, bomb detection, and scent work, his training regime is a tough one.
Wang Yanan, head of the Weifang police dog base, described how Fu Zai stood out among his peers at just two months old. He described Fu Zai as a “more progressive” addition to the force, emphasizing the dog’s unique physical attributes. “His short legs provide an advantage, allowing him to navigate tight spaces and search under vehicles with ease,” Wang explained.
Fans on social media call him the publicity dog because of his universal appeal. If nothing else, he’s an amazing PR opportunity for the police. Fu Zai’s charming antics create a lighter narrative—who doesn’t love a corgi?!
Currently, Fu Zai is still in training, but at 6 months old this pup already possesses the qualities needed for effective police work. He’s a lot more than a cute face: he’s redefining what it means to be a police dog in China, proving that even the most unconventional candidates can be effective in the line of duty.
